Salamanca and the best (possibly only) vegetarian tapas

30th October – 1st November

At it again! We set out from Madrid with another car and nothing but more Spanish countryside to explore. I just can't get enough of these beautiful landscapes.

It was back to just Ian and I again. So with the freedom of another hire car we decided to head to the north coast of Spain. But first, we stopped off in Salamanca.

A lovely old university city, Salamanca’s old town is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and features beautiful old cathedrals and university buildings. Perhaps my favourite thing about this place is an age old tradition still upheld today.  Historically students would write their name and victory symbol in Bulls blood on city buildings to announce their graduation and advertise their availability for work. These days they don’t use blood, but the walls of many buildings around the city are still covered in, and continue to be inscribed with these markings. Pretty cool.

Whilst wandering the streets we came across Cafe Atelier. This place was awesome, serving vegetarian tapas (somewhat of a rarity in meat loving Spain) these were some of the best tapas I have ever had. If ever you find yourself in Salamanca, this place is definitely worth a visit.

After our couple of days in Salamanca it was time to hit the road again. For me, that meant being able to admire some more of this on our way…

Aaah.

But just when I though the scenery couldn’t get much nicer, along comes Northern Spain..
