Getting all historical in Rome

26th September – 2nd October

The one, the only, the great Colosseum. Now, I am not much of a history kinda person. It just doesn't get me as excited as it does some others. But that said, it was a pretty impressive sight.

After our lovely couple of days in Cinque Terre (I really wish it could have been longer).. We headed to Siena. Now, Siena.. Siena. I honestly can’t say it did that much for me. It’s a small old Italian city with lots of history (like most). It is quite unique given its shell shaped central ‘square’. And the buildings are all brown brick/stone. So, after two nights there I was excited to get to Rome.

An alleyway in the old town of Siena. As I said, it was pretty, but really didn't do that much for me.

Rome!

Rome was a pretty cool city. Having personally found that many places in Italy seemed a little too focussed on being so traditional and caught up with the importance of this.. For me, Rome offered an abundance of something different. There were lively places that were quirky and interesting, modern and fresh. We found ourselves spending a fair bit of time wandering around Trastevere and all its cool little bars and restaurants. The granite al caffe at Bar San Calisto was amazing.. Picture chilled whipped cream layered with strong coffee granita and then topped with more chilled whipped cream.. Delicious (and for only 1€)! We also found ourselves at another Aperitivo bar – Freni e Frizioni – enjoying an awesome buffet and cocktails.

We did also do something other than eat and drink in Rome. We made our way to the Colosseum and the Forum, Vatican City as well as the (closed and being renovated) Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps (whilst pretty, they are really just steps).  We also visited the Pantheon.  It was an incredible building, and as it was raining, quite cool to see the rain falling through the opening in the roof.

The elaborate interior within the Vatican City Museums. This place is ridiculously drenched in wealth.. I have never seen so much expensive artwork. It is kind of sickening really.
