Lake Garda and Florence

19th September – 24th September

Lake Garda, Italy.
Lake Garda, Italy.

Our next destination – Lake Garda.  This is Italy’s largest lake.. and it is pretty huge.  From the southern end of the lake there are beautiful views to the north with the huge mountain ranges in the background.  It is a popular holiday destination for locals.

We were staying in the south, in Desenzano del Garda.  It was nice to have a couple of days to relax and not do much.  And whilst the Lake was beautiful, I can’t say that I would ever go back.  Maybe it would have been a bit better staying in the north, where there is easier access to hiking and bike trails to get out and explore it a bit more.

Having spent a few days relaxing we then headed on to Florence.  I really quite liked Florence.  It was pretty and had a bit of a buzz about it, people in the streets and lots of nice little shops, bars and cafes.  We also had our first introduction to Italian aperitivo buffets at a bar called Kitsch.. You buy a drink, you get a huge (and really delicious) buffet as well.

Santa Maria del Fiore (the Duomo), Florence. Noe, I have seen a lot of cathedrals during our travels. But I can honestly say, standing before this one all lit up at night, it is one of the most breathtaking.

Santa Maria del Fiore. The outside of this building is incredible, covered in pink and green marble tiles.

One of the many great little deli/cafes in Florence. Food in Italy is pretty good. So much cheese!

Florence has an incredible number of old statues and artworks throughout the city centre.
